Is mustard vegan? A lot of the time it is! But some mustard products do contain animal products, making them not vegan. I’ve included a list of vegan-friendly mustard brands.
Mustard, a condiment known for its bright yellow color, is served with all kinds of dishes. It’s a fantastic way to add a burst of flavor to sandwiches, salads, and more.
Mustard is made from the seeds of the mustard plant, which means it should be perfectly safe for vegans to eat. With that said, you’ll want to ask a few questions before picking up mustard at the grocery store.
Most mustard products are made from simple ingredients and are vegan-safe. With that said, there are a few types of mustard that you’ll want to watch out for. Since honey is an animal product, honey mustard is not vegan.
Scouring labels won’t tell you everything when you’re trying to find a vegan mustard, which is why you’ll want to stick to brands that have been confirmed safe whenever possible. Thankfully, there is a wide assortment of vegan mustard products to choose from. Whether you love Dijon, brown mustard, or traditional yellow mustard, there’s something out there for you.

What to Watch Out For
If you choose a mustard that’s not listed here, there are a few ingredients that you’ll want to be wary of. Mustard products that are heavily processed may contain additives, and there’s no guarantee that those additives will be vegan-safe.
In addition to honey and verjuice, you’ll want to look out for products that contain wine or white sugar. Both of these ingredients go through a refining process, and that process could involve animal byproducts.
To remove impurities from sugar and to make it bright white, animal bones are sometimes used. There aren’t any bone particles in the actual sugar, but some people think that the contact with the bones means that the sugar isn’t vegan.
If that’s you, and your mustard contains sugar, you’ll want to make sure your mustard is specifically labeled as vegan or that it’s organic.
If sugar is organic, it’s not allowed to be filtered through bone char. So if you find a brand of organic mustard that uses sugar, then that’s safe (as long as it doesn’t contain other non-vegan ingredients).
Also, if a product is manufactured at a plant that works with animal products, cross-contamination could also be an issue.
More often than not, the answer to “is mustard vegan” is yes! In spite of that, there are some mustard products that vegans will want to avoid. As long as you know which brands you can trust, you’ll be able to enjoy this condiment all the time!
