Is Guinness gluten-free? Unfortunately, it is not.
On the ingredient list, you’ll see that Guinness is made from malted barley. Barley has gluten in it and should always be avoided if you have celiac disease or if you’re sensitive to gluten.
What is Gluten?
Leading a gluten-free diet can be challenging. There are so many different products out there and not all products are clear on whether or not gluten is on the ingredient list.
Gluten is a protein that is found in wheat (including spelt), barley, and rye. For some, eating gluten-free is a simple diet fad; for others, it’s a health issue.
For those who have celiac disease, or those who are gluten sensitive, eating products with gluten in them can have serious health consequences including bloating, hives, skin rashes, joint pain, and gut pain as well as other digestive issues and health issues.
Gluten creates the elasticity that makes dough stretchy. It’s often added to bread products to ensure that they will bind together properly when baking.
The short-list is that if a product contains wheat, barley, or rye, it has gluten in it. Thus, all products that list wheat, barley, or rye should be avoided at all costs if you require a gluten-free diet due to celiac disease or gluten sensitivity.
It’s not always clear whether or not a product contains gluten. Some labels will specify that a product contains “wheat, egg, soy, or milk” at the end of the ingredient list. These products make it easier for those who are trying to live a gluten-free life.
Understanding how to properly read labels will go far in helping a person to understand whether or not there may be gluten hidden in a specific product.
