Healthy Chocolate Raspberry Pudding (paleo, vegan, dairy-free, gluten-free)

This thick and creamy healthy chocolate raspberry pudding is guilt-free and sweetened with fruit! Naturally gluten-free with paleo, vegan and dairy-free options.

Yup. It’s actually healthy.

There’s no added sugar at all. Just fruit. There’s about half an avocado, 3/4 cup raspberries and some dates. I normally use bananas in these type of things but I didn’t want the taste to overpower the raspberries, so I went with dates.

Thanks to the avocado, you’ve got your healthy fats. And the raspberries provide you with a nice amount of fiber. I didn’t strain the raspberries because I don’t mind the seeds, but if you’ve got picky kids, you may want to do that prior to adding the raspberries to the avocado / date mixture.

There’s a small optional amount of Greek yogurt, regular yogurt, or whatever dairy-free milk you have on hand. It’s good either way, but I preferred it with Greek yogurt.

I have to be honest. This doesn’t taste totally like normal pudding (in case that’s not obvious by the ingredients ;)) First you’ve got the raspberry seeds and on top of that, it’s not nearly as sweet. But it is incredibly creamy and will definitely satisfy any chocolate or dessert craving you may have!

It was plenty sweet for Mr. T and I, but you can always add in a little sugar. I tossed in a little coconut sugar to the pudding once, just to see if it’d dissolve or taste funky due to the taste of the coconut sugar, but all was well.

I first posted this chocolate raspberry pudding in February 2012 but I thought it needed a makeover so here it is again! If you’ve had my chocolate avocado smoothie – this recipe is very similar. You can’t taste the avocado (another thing that I don’t like!) and chocolate is the predominant flavor. You can definitely taste the raspberries, and it’s more than subtle, but it’s mostly chocolate.

And um, apparently it’s chocolate raspberry recipe week on the blog. It was unintended but I hope y’all don’t mind. :)

Healthy Chocolate Raspberry Pudding (paleo, vegan, dairy-free, gluten-free)
  • Prep Time:
  • Cook Time:
  • Ready in:
  • Yield: 1 large or 2 smallish/medium servings

Ingredients

  • 6 dates (40 grams - if you use Medjool dates, go by weight)
  • 85 grams cold avocado flesh (~1/2 avocado)
  • 3/4 cup (94 grams) frozen or fresh raspberries
  • 2 tablespoons Dutch-process cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons Greek yogurt, regular yogurt, or dairy-free / vegan / paleo milk of choice - optional

Directions

  1. Blend the dates and avocado together with an immersion blender or a small food processor until it's very creamy. You can also use a blender if you have a very good one like a Blendtec (my regular blender requires too much liquid for a pudding like this).
  2. Add the frozen raspberries, cocoa powder and vanilla and process until well combined.
  3. Add the yogurt or milk, if desired.
  4. Serve immediately. If you use fresh raspberries, you'll probably want to refrigerate for 1-2 hours before serving.

I admit I was skeptical about putting avocado into a dessert (quite skeptical actually), but the picture looks great and I love your recipes so I decided to try it and I'm soooo glad that I did. It's phenomenal! Honestly the best pudding I've ever tried. I'm shocked at how delicious it is! Who knew avocado could taste this good? I like it thick too so I made it without milk, used 2 cups of raspberries and 1/2 cup of sugar. Heavenly, and I haven't even put it in the fridge yet. I will definitely be making this for Valentine's Day:) Thank you!

Hey, it's Heather R! I've missed your comments. :) I'm so happy that you tried this out despite the weird addition of avocado! And guess what I just made today? Nutella fudge (no sugar other than what's in the Nutella) with… avocado! It's crazy but it somehow worked. Thanks for your feedback, as always. :) It made my day when I saw that I got a comment from you! And the best pudding ever? That's really generous of you. I have to admit that I prefer the sugar and butter filled kind. Especially butterscotch. :D

Alaine – I also love sneaking fruits and veggies into my dessert because I have a hard time getting enough. I hope you enjoy this if you try it out! :)

You never know. I actually found a really healthy recipe the other day, with all kinds of weird healthy things, and one of the ingredients was some kind of chocolate powder, so I thought maybe that's what you had used. But good to know that I don't need to go buy that funky powder to make your version. :)

Miryam – I'm so happy that it worked out for you! By chocolate powder, do you mean chocolate cocoa? If not, I'm really curious what chocolate powder is. :)

I can't wait to see your post!

I just made this making some changes. I used some orange zest, orange juice and triple sec to make it orange flavor. I also used dark chocolate powder instead. It was amazing. I will do a post about it next week so I will let you know :-). I will be using avocados a lot more often now!!

Julie – Thanks, but it wasn't really my idea. :) You should try it some time! Avocados are cheap right now. They've even had them at Aldi for a few weeks at 65 cents each.

Hi Erin, I would have never imagined adding chocolate with avocado together, though both have the same texture. This is inventive!

Nora – Thanks! But you know, if you try this version with a different fruit then you're just trying your version with a different fruit. :)

Nicole – I hope you can try it some day! I was pretty skeptical, even after a few bites, but then I liked it quite a lot. :)

Sara – I hope you like it! It's different but if you like avocados anyway I don't think you can go wrong.

This pudding looks delicious, and the sprinkles are so cute. I've been meaning to make dessert with avocado for a while now. I've seen some avocado cakes, but this is my first time seeing avocado pudding – another great idea. I hope you have a great Valentine's Day!

So, how where they? I will definitely have to try this. I have had avocado on my ingredient recipe list to try but I haven't got around to it just yet!

The pudding really looks luxurious and the consistency seems just right. I think making it with raspberries will be better than bananas eventhough increasing the sugar content may be need it :-)

Heidi – I hope you like it! What recipe did you use? I have an avocado stockpile to use in pudding and other desserts and I'd love to try other recipes.

    Katrina – Thanks. :)

Amanda – It was new to me too! There are so many avocado dessert dishes out there and I was completely unaware until a few weeks ago. I hope you can try it at some point!

Yummy! I actually just tried a chocolate avocado pudding last week and LOVE it. I can't believe I haven't tried it before. We have a ton of raspberries in our freezer from last summer still, and avocados are on sale this week so I'm totally making this :D
