Are Pringles Gluten-free? And an Alternative!

Are Pringles gluten-free? Unfortunately not. And this seems to be true of Pringles found everywhere around the world. If you’re lucky enough to live in a country where Pringles are gluten-free, let me know and I’ll update this post!

Pringles are made with wheat starch, which is actually an ingredient that is allowed to be used in foods that are labeled as gluten-free – as long as the gluten has been removed from the wheat starch.

Many, many people with celiac react to wheat starch, so it’s best to avoid Pringles if you’re sensitive to gluten.

Furthermore, Pringles even lists wheat as an allergen on their labels! So, sadly, Pringles are a big no-no.

But don’t despair, there’s an alternative!

Gluten-free alternatives to Pringles

This info comes straight from Lay’s website and is current as of 1/7/2022, but for the US only. Lay’s is a huge company and ingredients can vary from country to country.

They state that: Frito-Lay has validated through analytical testing that the following products contain less than 20 ppm of gluten, the level put forward in the FDA’s Gluten Free Food Labeling Final Rule.

Lay’s Stax gluten-free varieties:

  • LAY’S® STAX® Bacon & Cheddar Potato Skins Flavored Potato Crisps
  • LAY’S® STAX® Buffalo Wings with Ranch Flavored Potato Crisps
  • LAY’S® STAX® Cheddar Flavored Potato Crisps
  • LAY’S® STAX® Chile Limón Flavored Potato Crisps
  • LAY’S® STAX® Flamas® Flavored Potato Crisps
  • LAY’S® STAX® Mesquite Barbecue Flavored Potato Crisps
  • LAY’S® STAX® Original Potato Crisps
  • LAY’S® STAX® Salt & Vinegar Flavored Potato Crisps
  • LAY’S® STAX® Sour Cream & Onion Flavored Potato Crisps

The one non gluten-free variety:

  • LAY’S® STAX® XTRA Flamin’ Hot Flavored Potato Crisps

There actually aren’t any gluten ingredients in that variety, so it’s unclear if that is an oversight or if it’s perhaps manufactured in a facility where gluten products are produced. But that would seem odd that just one flavor is produced in a different facility!

The safest thing is to avoid it. Or if you’ve just found out you need to eat gluten-free, and you really love the hot flavored Stax, get in contact with Lays and see what they say.

I hope I’ve answered your question on whether or not Pringles are gluten-free. I hope you can find the Lay’s Stax! If you have any other questions, let me know below, and I’ll be happy to answer. :)
